JoJo's Top 10 Picks
Being that Mr. White wore the number 10 throughout his NBA career; we thought it would correlate better with the foundation to give away ten scholarships. Presenting it as a “Top 10” also means that the number one scholarship will also consist of the most financial aid to the that student-athlete. We also believe that having a “Top 10” keeps the sports related theme that foundation is aiming for. The ten different scholarship levels will keep student-athletes striving to achieve more and always working harder in the class room and on the court.
To achieve the bottom five scholarships, a student-athlete must obtain a 3.0 GPA, plan on continuing to play a sport in college, and have a minimum of 40 hours of volunteer work. Education is key to success and can also help when applying for other potential scholarships and that is why we feel a 3.0 GPA is an acceptable goal to achieve for these athletes. Because of Mr. Whites’ athletic background and the nature of the foundation, continuing to play a sport at the collegiate level is a must in the scholarships. 40 hours may seem like a heavy amount of volunteer service for a high school student to achieve but it shows that he or she is committed to giving back to the community. Combining these three different requirements, it will make the scholarships that much more meaningful to each winner.
The top five scholarships in “JoJo’s Top 10 picks” will consist of the same aspects but at a higher level. To be in the top five, a student athlete must obtain a 3.5 GPA or better. This provides a big enough gap between the levels which is why the scholarships are worth more. Instead of 40 hours of volunteer service, a student athlete must have a minimum of 60 hours. We want the amount of work and effort to increase along with the amounts of the scholarships.
